This Week In Texas: Mignon McGarry Memos

By Mignon McGarry
TOA Legislative Advocate / Memo: Wednesday November 7, 2007
TOA Online Version: All Memos

November 7th, Wednesday

Another Election Day has come and gone.  As expected, turnout was light across the state.  Voters approved all 16 constitutional

amendments, including Proposition 15, the $3 billion bond proposal for cancer research and prevention.

In the special election for House District 97, the seat formerly held by Rep. Anna Mowery (R-Ft. Worth), the top two vote getters were Democrat Dan Barrett and Republican Dr. Mark Shelton.  Former Representative Bob Leonard had the third highest vote total with Craig Goldman coming in fourth.  Barrett and Shelton will face each other in a runoff election in December.  The winner of the runoff will finish Mowery’s current term which lasts through 2008.  To keep the seat and serve a full term, including service during the 2009 legislative session, the winner of the runoff will have to run again in the March primary and next November’s general election, possibly facing the same set of opponents.

In other campaign news, Rep. Paula Pierson (D-Arlington) will face Republican Bill Burch in the general election next November.

Another Republican has joined the race for House District 130 currently held by Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale (R-Houston).  Republican Allen Fletcher of Tomball joins Michael Kubosh in the race for House District 130.

The field for House District 55 continues to grow.  Republicans who have announced their intention to run for the seat currently held by retiring Rep. Dianne Delisi (R-Temple) include Temple Mayor Pro Tem Martha Tyroch, Temple restaurateur Ralph Sheffield, former teacher Mike Pearce, and John Alaniz, a Temple business owner.  Sam Murphey, U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards' former district director, has announced for the Democratic primary.

Governor Perry has appointed Dr. Bryan W. Shaw, an associate professor in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department of Texas A&M University, to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.  He replaces Kathleen White of Valentine whose term expired.
