TOA President's Update

By John T. Gill, MD
President, Texas Orthopaedic Association

In September of 2007, AAOS President Dr. Jim Beaty sent all Academy members a letter addressing the Department of Justice's investigation and ruling of the relationships between five hip and knee surgical implant manufacturers and orthopaedic surgeons.

I encourage you to re-read Dr. Beaty’s letter and the AAOS Standards of Professionalism position statement concerning industry relations. More information resources can be viewed at this AAOS website location.

This site will offer an overview of the Relationships with Industry issue, as well as allow you to download Patient-Physician Communications forms.

AAOS and TOA have taken this matter very seriously. We have invited Rick Peterson, the Academy’s General Counsel to participate in a discussion of industry relations during our TOA Annual Meeting.

We hope that you will support the on-going efforts to assist orthopaedic surgeons and the relationship with our industry partners in the most professional and ethical manner to provide and enhance patient care.

This Week In Texas: Mignon McGarry Memos

By Mignon McGarry
TOA Legislative Advocate / Memo: Wed. November 28th, 2007
TOA Online Version: All Memos

February 7th, Thursday

Rep. Robert Puente (D-San Antonio) has resigned his House District 119 seat, effective February 1st. Puente, who previously announced his

retirement, moved up the date in order to give his successor a few months of seniority over other incoming House members. Democrat Roland Gutierrez is the only candidate on the November ballot. Governor Perry will now call a special election to fill the vacancy. Expect that election to be held on May 10th, the next uniform election date.

The Senate Committees are beginning work on their Interim Charges. The Senate Finance Committee held a joint meeting with the Senate Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security on Tuesday, February 5th to discuss the Texas Department of Transportation’s 2008-2009 appropriation. In a series of heated exchanges, Senators expressed concern at the lack of coordination between the planning and forecasting divisions at TxDOT. Agency commissioners and Executive Director Amadeo Saenz faced tough questions about their budget and their rationale behind their delaying 54 road projects in 28 counties until the next fiscal year.

Nationally, it looks as if the Texas primaries will matter after all. With no clear front runner in either major party after Super Tuesday, voters in Texas will have their say in choosing the party nominees. Early voting begins February 19th followed closely by Texas Primary Day on March 4th.

Governor Perry appointed Janiece M. Longoria of Houston to The University of Texas System Board of Regents. Longoria was appointed to a term to expire on February 1, 2011 and replaces Robert Estrada of Fort Worth on the Board.

Hill Country Sports Medicine Seeks Orthopaedic Surgeon

We are seeking a BC/BE orthopaedic surgeon interested in joining a busy sports medicine practice.  Our practice serves as the team physicians to Texas State University, a division 1-AA program, as well as multiple high schools in the area.  PT is offered on site.  In addition, we are affiliated with a profitable physician owned surgery center.  Also, we

have a satellite location in SW Austin, approximately 25 minutes from our main location.

The practice is in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, at the center of the Austin-San Antonio corridor.  Our community offers both small city convenience and big connections.  Three of the ten largest cities in the U.S. are within 200 miles of San Marcos.

Please contact Gerard M. Pennington, M.D. via phone at (512) 787-3566 or via email at this address: gmp@hcsm.net or visit our website at www.hcsm.net.
