TOA
President's
Update:
2009 AAOS
Nominating Committee
|
|
By Timothy L. Beck, MD
President, Texas Orthopaedic Association
Our
Past President and current Chair of the AAOS Board of Councilors,
Dr. John T. Gill has contacted you and asked you to send in
your vote for the 2009 AAOS Nominating Committee.
By now,
you should have received your 2009 AAOS Nominating |
|
Committee ballot
in the mail. You have until August 1 to complete and return your
ballot and I encourage you to not only do so, but to reach out to your
partners, your circle of influence and to the Academy members of your
state to do the same.
Last year, only
30% of Academy fellows, about 6000 of the potential 21,000 members,
bothered to vote for members of this committee that will select the
next President and several board members of the Academy. At the BOC
and the BOS, we have spent much time over the last few years trying to
increase the influence of the general fellowship on this process. Now
is your chance.
As leaders in
the Academy, you have had the opportunity to get to know, and to work
with, a number of people nominated this year that may or may not be
widely recognizable to the general fellowship. As leaders from your
state, your opinion is valued and you may want to share your knowledge
of any of the listed candidates with other orthopaedic surgeons in
your state. The AAOS has a list serve available to you to reach out
to all of the Academy members from your state in one email. It can be
found on the AAOS website under the Government Relations tab, and List
Servers in
the left hand column or by simply clicking
here. You only have access to the members of your own
state.
I join John Gill
in asking you to participate in the AAOS Nominating Committee process
and vote.
-
Be sure you
vote by August 1.
-
Get your
partners and those in your immediate community to vote.
-
Consider
sending an email to fellows in your state encouraging them to vote
as well. If so inclined, share your knowledge of individuals you
feel would serve well in this capacity. Most fellows never get to
see the inner workings of the Academy. You have had a peek behind
the curtain and your opinion is valued.

Senate Passes Medicare Fix With Veto-Proof
Majority
|
|
On July 9, 2008, Medicare legislation
that includes an 18-month, short-term physician payment fix passed in
the U.S. Senate and will now head to the desk of President George W.
Bush. The House of Representatives had passed H.R. 6331 prior to the
July 4th recess. Although President Bush previously indicated he would
veto the bill because it includes reductions in the payments to
Medicare Advantage plans, passage in both the House and Senate was by
veto-proof majorities. The AAOS |
|
Office of Government Relations will
continue to provide AAOS members with updates on efforts to avert
future payment cuts and to achieve a permanent solution. To

AMA - Senate Votes To Stop Medicare
Meltdown
|
|
Statement Attributable to: J. James Rohack,
M.D.
President-elect, American Medical Association
“Today the American Medical Association
celebrates that the Senate heard the voices of patients and physicians
and voted to stop Medicare physician payment cuts that would have hurt
seniors’ access to care by
a bipartisan, veto-proof majority of 69 to 30. We especially appreciate
|
|
the heroic efforts of Sen. Edward Kennedy,
who made this critical vote his first after his surgery. We also applaud
those senators who put patients first and voted yes even though they had
concerns about the process or some of the bill’s provisions.”
“Now we – along with seniors, the
disabled and military families – call on President Bush to sign this
bill into law to protect access to health care for so many deserving
Americans.”
“On July 1, a Medicare physician payment
cut of 10.6 percent went into effect, putting access to health care for
seniors, the disabled and military families at risk. In the first week
of July, tens of thousands of patients and physicians contacted their
senators and urged them to vote for HR 6331. Those voices were heard and
heeded.”
“Just two weeks ago, the same bill – HR
6331 – passed the House of Representatives by an overwhelming,
bipartisan, veto-proof majority of 355 to 59.”
“Now we urge President Bush to hear and
heed the voices of seniors, the disabled and military families – and
sign the bill into law for the health of America.”
