AMA
CEJA Report On Financial Relationships With Industry And CME
|
|
By John Early, MD
President, Texas Orthopaedic Association
The Texas Orthopaedic
Association is a TMA-Accredited Provider of Continuing
Medical Education. All controversy regarding CME and
orthopaedic industry impacts our Association. The
information shown below will give you an idea of what
the CME planners and provider
|
|
|
limitations will be in the future.
This is why it is so important that our TOA members and our friends
in the orthopaedic industry become involved and supportive of the
Texas Orthopaedic Foundation. At the recent TOF Annual Business
Meeting, Dr. Tim Beck read the list of the following Foundation
contributors...click
here to see if you are listed. The Foundation
will accept Founders Circle members through the end of June for
individuals and through the end of July for Friends of Orthopaedics.
Our credit card
feature will make it easy for you to
donate if you
have not already contributed. Please help us keep a strong CME
program like the one just held in Austin at the TOA/TOF Annual
Meeting. Remember that Texas Orthopaedic Foundation (TOF) was formed
to address all of what you see in these PDF attachments from AMA.

affairs.
Our
leadership anticipated this controversy in 2007 and our Foundation
is well situated and was carefully drawn to address all the newest
"standards" and ACCME policies through the "blind trust" model. As
we watch this controversy unfold, the TOA continuing medical
education events make it necessary to begin charging registration
fees for our CME programming. We will continue to work with our
orthopaedic industry to move more in the direction of the "blind
trust" model by increasing TOF's role in our continuing medical
education programming. We will also work with industry to go through
their grant-making departments.
The AMA just released its revised report on Financial Relationships
with Industry and CME from the Council on Ethical and Judicial
Affairs (CEJA). There is also a companion informational report from
the AMA Council on Medical Education. The AMA House of Delegates
will vote on the CEJA report at its annual meeting in Chicago June
13-17.
The AMA Council on Medical Education report provides good background
information on the history of using commercial support in CME. And,
as you know, we as accredited CME providers that grant AMA PRA
Category 1 Credit™ must be in compliance with AMA guidelines and
ethical opinions related to CME.

HVO
Launches Orthopaedic Program in Mongolia
|
|
We would like to thank
Andrea Moody (a.moody@hvousa.org)
for the below information. She may contact her at
202-296-0928.
[Washington, DC - April 13, 2009] - HVO is pleased to
announce the
establishment of an orthopaedic training
program in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia at the National Traumatology and
Orthopaedic Research Center (NTORC). As the major trauma hospital
for Mongolia, NTORC serves a
|
|
population of approximately 2.5 million.
The hospital has 420 trauma beds and is staffed by 35 orthopaedic and trauma surgeons, 10 orthopaedic residents and 15
orthopaedic nurses.
Volunteers with the program focus on improving the quality of
orthopaedic care by increasing the knowledge among orthopaedic
surgeon faculty members and orthopaedic residents. Training is
provided in the areas of pelvic and acetabular trauma, knee
arthroscopy, pediatric orthopaedics, hand surgery and other
orthopaedic sub-specialty areas as identified by the site.
HVO volunteers offer training to the residents through lectures and
presentations, participating in clinics and rounds, as well as
hands-on demonstrations of techniques and surgical methods.
Participants with the program must be board eligible/certified
orthopaedists, hold a current license and have five years of
experience. Final year residents are eligible to volunteer if paired
with an experienced volunteer surgeon. HVO is seeking to recruit 5 -
7 volunteers each year for a minimum two week assignment.
A private, non-profit membership organization, HVO was founded in
1986 to improve global health through education. HVO designs and
implements clinical education programs in child health, primary
care, trauma and rehabilitation, essential surgical care, oral
health, hematology, infectious disease, nursing education, oncology,
burn management and wound care. In more than 25 resource-poor
nations, volunteers train, mentor and provide critical professional
support to health care providers who care for the neediest
populations in the most difficult of circumstances.
To learn more about volunteering with Health Volunteers Overseas,
visit the
web site
or contact the HVO Program Department (202)-296-0928.

This Week In Texas: Mignon
McGarry Memos
|
|
By Mignon McGarry
TOA Legislative Advocate
TOA Online Version: All Memos
May 13,
2009, Wednesday
Rep. Edmund Kuempel (R-Seguin), the current Chairman of the
House Licensing & Administrative Practices Committee, was
found collapsed |
|
last night around 10:00 p.m. at
the Capitol. CPR was administered and he was rushed to the
hospital. It appears that he suffered a heart attack. House
Speaker Joe Straus issued a statement at 9:30 a.m. this
morning, saying that Chairman Kuempel remains in intensive
care in stable condition.
The phrase "It's not over until the fat lady sings" should
not be ignored when applied to the Texas Legislature.
Although most would agree that House bills remaining in
House committees on this date and Senate Bills remaining in
Senate committees on this date are "dead" as stand alone
measures, the bills can live on as amendments to other
bills. Everyone in Austin is focused on attaching these dead
bills to "vehicles", bills continuing to move through the
process with a good chance of passage.
The final House Calendar containing House bills has been
printed and the deadline for passing House bills in the
House is midnight tomorrow. The House will likely remain in
floor session late tonight as well as tomorrow.
House Bill 300 by Rep. Carl Isett (R-Lubbock), the bill
containing the Sunset Advisory Commission's recommendations
for the Texas Department of Transportation has finally
passed the House after the addition of 183 amendments. The
bill is off to the Senate where additional changes will be
made.
This week, the Senate Committee on Health and Human Services
approved a statewide smoking ban proposal, sending it on to
the full Senate. The vote on Senate Bill 544 by Sen. Rodney
Ellis (D-Houston) was 5-3. The bill would ban smoking at
indoor workplaces in Texas, including bars and restaurants.
The Senate version is stricter than the one considered by a
House committee which would exempt certain bars and would
not apply to counties with fewer than 115,000 residents.
The Texas House approved Senate Bill 61 by Sen. Judith
Zaffirini (D-Laredo) this week. If signed by Governor Perry,
children under age 8 riding in passenger vehicles would have
to sit secured in a booster seat or car seat if they are
under age 8 or less than 4'9" tall. Under current law,
children under age 5 and shorter than 36" are required to
sit in child safety seats.
Need an interesting Texana fact to stump your friends? Noted
Texas historian and author Light Townsend Cummins of Sherman
was named the official State Historian by Gov. Rick Perry
this week. The state historian is a largely ceremonial
designation that lasts for two years.
