It's Summer Time Again:
Sunscreen and Vitamin D
|
By
David J. Mansfield, MD
President, Texas Orthopaedic Association
Summer is here! For
many of us, especially in Texas, that means time
outside playing in and by the pool. Summer also
means millions of kids slathered in gallons of
sunscreen. Media outlets from the New York Times to
MSNBC are reporting on the epidemic Vitamin D
deficiency in America related to sunscreen. Of
course we, as Orthopaedic Surgeons, know that the
sun is essential for the production of Vitamin D,
and Vitamin D is essential for bone health. What are
we supposed to tell our patients to do when they ask
about sunscreen use?
First some facts about
Vitamin D. Vitamin D is not truly a Vitamin, as
individuals with adequate sunlight exposure can
generate enough Vitamin D
themselves. Cholecalciferol is generated in the
skin, hydroxylated once in the liver and once more
by the kidneys to produce the active form of the
Vitamin, 1,25 DihydroxyCholecalciferol. This active

Tips on
Recruiting, Employing Generation Y Orthopedic Surgeons
|
|
By
Bob Spoerl
May 21, 2012
In a session
at the Becker's Hospital Review annual
meeting in Chicago on May 18, Les Jebson,
executive director of University of Florida
Health System and formerly executive
director of University of Florida Orthopedic
and Sports Medicine, discussed observations
about Generation Y and how to employ them as
orthopedic surgeons.
Mr. Jebson
noted two overarching characteristics about
many Gen Y physicians that physician
recruitment plans should consider. The young
generation is likely to be:
-
Achievement-oriented
-
Family-centric
When
recruiting recently graduated surgeons,
hospitals and clinics need to consider these
factors, Mr. Jebson said.

Worth Repeating: Sex-related Differences in Concussion Symptoms
Among High-School Athletes
|
|
By
Elizabeth Arendt, MD, and Margot Putukian,
MD, FACSM
Sports-related concussions have attracted
attention in recent years, with an increased
focus on the diagnosis, appropriate
treatment, and return to play guidelines.
Because symptomatology is critical to the
diagnosis of a concussion, knowing if there
are age- or sex-specific differences in
symptoms would be crucial in determining
appropriate treatment of this injury.
Incidence and definition
An estimated 3 million sports-related
concussions occur annually in the United
States. After motor vehicle accidents,
sports are the second leading cause of
traumatic brain injury among people age 15
to 24 years.
A concussion is defined as “a complex
pathophysiological...
